Midnight Sun in Lofoten: When and Where Can You See It?

Updated October 24, 2026 · 4 min read

A low golden sun above the sea illuminating a quiet Lofoten beach at midnight

Travel between 28 May and 14 July for the official midnight-sun period in Lofoten, then choose an open north- or west-facing coast. Continuous daylight does not mean the solar disc remains visible from every village: mountains can hide it even when the sun is above the horizon.

The dates are a window, not a weather promise

Visit Lofoten gives 28 May to 14 July for the archipelago. Local dates vary slightly; at Uttakleiv the published period is 25 May to 18 July. Before and after those dates, nights can still be remarkably bright, but the sun technically dips below the horizon.

Cloud is the other limit. A perfect calendar date cannot produce a visible sun through a solid cloud layer. Keep more than one evening free if this matters to you and check the local forecast rather than treating one midnight as a guaranteed performance.

Where to look

Laukvik, Hov, Eggum and Uttakleiv are among the official suggestions because they face the open side of the islands. Svolvær and Leknes sit behind high mountains that can block the low sun. From those towns, reaching a more exposed coast is often more useful than waiting beside the hotel.

Do not stop on the road for a photograph. Use an established parking area, keep private drives clear and walk the remaining distance. Beaches and viewpoints stay quiet only if visitors avoid lights, noise and blocked access late at night.

Midnight does not always give the best picture

At midnight the sun is lowest and the light can be warm, but cloud on the horizon may hide it. Arriving earlier lets you choose a composition, check the foreground and enjoy the gradual change instead of chasing one minute on the clock.

The 1.5-hour midnight-sun tour is a guided horseback ride from Hov Gård on Gimsøy, not a viewpoint transfer. The booking page excludes children under 8 and pregnant women, sets a maximum rider weight of 95 kg and requires no riding experience. Check the meeting point, whether any pickup is offered and the cancellation terms there; no operator can guarantee clear sky.

What to bring

Treat it as a late outdoor excursion. Take warm layers, a windproof and waterproof shell and a charged phone. A sleep mask is useful afterwards because rooms may remain bright. Photographers should bring a tripod only where it can stand without obstructing paths or damaging vegetation.

Our recommendation

Plan two possible evenings and choose Hov, Eggum, Uttakleiv or Laukvik according to cloud and transport. Book the midnight-sun ride at Hov if you want to see the coast from a horse; without a car or interest in riding, sort out transport to the open coast first. The right expectation is extraordinary light, not a guaranteed unobstructed circle on the horizon.
